Coveting

I was thinking about doing a currently post that you see every once in a while but then I figured I'd do a "coveting" post instead. I'll probably do the currently post next week, if you're disappointed, haha. These are all items I really want but for one reason or another I haven't had a chance to get it. 

1. Tarte Poppy Picnic Limited Edition Palette 

I love it when Tarte comes out with new palettes, in fact they have another brand new one out right now that I want to but it's exactly like the Rainforest After Dark palette that I already have so I'll "settle" for this one. I love the subtle eye colors and Tarte's blush is my absolute favorite. 

2. Accuquilt Go! Baby Fabric Cutter

I have been lusting after this cutter for months. I made the mistake of not buying it when it was on sale for $89.00. I just assumed it would go back on sale easily. A few months later, it's still sitting at the $129.99 price. I have a great quilt idea that I want to make using the circle pattern from this set and my fingers are itching to buy this and make it. 

3. Maskcara Custom Palette

I would love to buy this but I can't justify the $42 price tag for two reasons: 1. I'm an amateur at highlighting and contouring and I have tons of bronzer and highlighter products already and 2. I'm not a fan of cream products at all. I'd have to really get better at HAC and get more acclimated to cream products before I splurged on this. 

4. The perfect purse. 

There's no link or picture to this yet because I haven't found it. I can't explain what I'm looking for. I need a cute purse that is big enough to hold all my junk but not big enough that I can shove 3 books in it (my back can't take much more!). Right now I'm using a Michael Kors purse I borrowed from my mom and it's a very nice purse but it's not me. If you have any suggestions for good, inexpensive purses let me know, I'm on the lookout for "the one".

Beauty Favorites

It's been nearly a year since I've posted a beauty favorites list, so I think we're due. How about you?

1. Too Faced Absolutely Invisible Pressed Powder

This is the last step in my makeup process. I have really oily skin and this powder does a great job keeping my skin matte and fresh looking.

2. Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Hibiscus and Lip Shine in Blush

I got these two in a gift pack last year and I love them together. The lip balm gives a great, subtle color and the lip shine is a great finishing touch that doesn't leave my lips sticky.

3. Real Techniques Setting Brush

I use this brush to apply my highlighting powder. It's the perfect size to accentuate the areas I want to highlight. The brush is soft and durable, I am a fan of Real Techniques brushes!

4. Fabulips Sugar Scrub

My lips have been really dry and cracked this winter, a lot worse than normal. I just started using this scrub and have noticed a big difference. I love the vanilla scent and the soft way my lips feel afterwards!

5. Tarte Amazonian Clay in Dazzled

I love Tarte's blushes so much, if I could own every color I would. My most recent purchase is Dazzled and it's a bit darker than what I normally where but I love the pop of color it gives my cheeks.

6. Burt's Bees Acne Gel Cleanser

Nothing has made my hormonal acne disappear but this gel cleanser has come the closest to giving me clearer skin. 

7. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream

I was hestitant to try CC cream for the longest time but I tried this travel size cream and fell in love with it. It completely covers up the redness in my face and the acne. A little goes a long way and lasts all day.

Rainforest After Dark Palette

One of the things I purchased when I went shopping with MJ a few weeks ago was Tarte's Rainforest After Dark Palette. 

At $38, I was a little hesitant to purchase the palette, especially since I had just bought several items at Ulta and got an eye shadow palette while I was there. But I loved the blush, and in fact, before I saw it in store I was loving the blush color. Then MJ pointed out that it was a really good value, since the blush appeared to be full sized, which would run $26 on its own, and there are 6 shadows in the palette, which could be the the price of the palette on their own. Plus, I really wanted to check out Tarte's bronzer, Park Avenue Princess. 

I have to say, I absolutely love this palette, love it. I love the bronzer, highlighter and blush trio. The fact that they are all in one spot also means I'm more likely to contour my face on a regular basis instead of just on special occasions, it's more convenient! 

The shadows are gorgeous, and it comes with a card that shows you how to create two different looks from the shadows offered. The picture below is the day time look. 

I seriously cannot praise this palette enough, I highly recommend it! 

Ulta Haul

About three times a year Ulta mails out a 20% off coupon that you can use on pretty much everything, including most prestige brands. About three times a year I drop a good bit of money at Ulta only to get the coupon in the mail the next day, which happened to me last week. Luckily, I got the coupon the same day I went on my little spree and the store graciously refunded me some money when I came back with the coupon. 

Anyway, what's important here is that I came back with some amazing beauty items that I am over the moon about, and surprisingly enough I even bought something from Bare Minerals, even though most of the time we have a hate/hate relationship. I grabbed a few of my regulars, which you can see in the picture above, but also snatched up a few new goodies that I wanted to share with you today!

Bare Minerals Eye Shadow Quad in Happy Place

The first thing I did was ask the girl at Ulta (who graciously spent at least an hour with me trying on makeup) was to give me a look that I could wear everyday that would make my eyes pop. Man, did she deliver, and I can finally say there is something of Bare Minerals that I like! 

The Happy Place quad is a set of beautiful colors and I think the coppery pink color (upper right hand side in pic) is what really seals the deal in making the blues in my eyes come out. The color lasts all day (I do use a primer or cream shadow base) and the color payoff is great. The first day I wore this quad to work, I got so many compliments on it, which sealed the deal in it becoming my newest favorite item!

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Tipsy

My first experience with Tarte's amazing blush was in a sampler pack. The color provided was Thankful which was a gorgeous golden apricot pink color. The problem is that Thankful is not part of their regular blush line, so I asked the Ulta girl (sorry I have no idea what to call her) for the next best shade for my fair skin. She grabbed Tipsy which was a coral pink color. The color seemed a bit much for me at first but when I put it on, it looked really great. I do have to be careful though, since it's such a strong blush and color, I have to make sure I apply it lightly or blend it well, otherwise it's a bit clownish looking.

IT Cosmetics No Tug Waterproof Gel Eyeliner

Okay, so Ulta's gel eyeliner still is and always will be my favorite gel eyeliner. But they were out of stock of my color and IT Cosmetics had one with a built in sharpener (the only downfall to Ulta's eyeliner is that it doesn't have that). I figured I would try it out since I love gel eyeliner in the pencil form, and I really like this product. It goes on with great color and is smooth like buttah. My only problem is that it's tough to get off at the end of the day and flakes when I try to remove it. To be clear, it only flakes when I try to take it off, not during the day, but holy cow is it a pain in the butt to get off. 

Lacome Gloss in Love in Lily en Lame

I wanted to try and find a lip color and told the girl to just give me a bunch that she thought would look good on me. I tried this one on first and we both agreed that I didn't need to even try the other ones. It's a little sticky, which I expect in a gloss, but not unbearably so. I like that even though it is a gloss, the color is still bold enough to stand out on it's own, don't let the "gloss" aspect fool you. The color lasts about 2 hours for me, which I think its pretty good for a lip gloss. I would say that I'm stuck on this color but not on this specific product, if I find a dupe in a cheaper brand, I would go for that instead.

Beauty Repurchases

I have a short attention span when it comes to beauty products. Most of the time I don't even finish a product before I buy something new. Which would explain why I have so many tubes of mascara and eyeliner pencils. Anyway, every once in a while I find a product that I completely use up and buy again. The following items are things that I've repurchased multiple times and normally use on a daily basis. Most of these products I've already mentioned on previous beauty favorites posts, but they are absolutely worth mentioning again. Without further adieu:

Loreal Color Riche Lip Balm in Heavenly Berry

I love, love, love this lip balm. It gives me the perfect amount of subtle color to give me a MLBB (my lips but better) look. My first tube melted at my graduation because I couldn't be without it.

Tarte BB 12 Hour Primer

Before I tried this primer, I was not the least bit interested in BB cream (or any other in the alphabet for that matter). I need a bit more coverage for my face because I normally have breakouts on my chin and my cheeks are a little redder than the rest of my fact. This stuff was completely different. It provides great coverage (not full coverage, but it's a good start), SPF protection, and is a  decent primer to the foundation I normally use (which is listed below). 

Loreal Magic Lumi Highlighter

I love this highlighter. The application makes it easy to use and apply to my face, and it provides such a great highlight. When I take the time to contour my face, this is my go to highlighter, it makes such a difference! 

Ulta Gel Eyeliner Pencil

When I first heard gel eyeliner, I wanted to run for the hills. But I had a freebie to use under the old Ulta rewards and I figured since it was free, it wouldn't hurt to try it out. I'm so glad I did, it ended up being my new favorite go to eyeliner. It glides on smoothly, just like gel eyeliner, but since it's in the form of a pencil, I find the application so much easier. The staying power is great too!

Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara

The best compliment I ever got for my eyelashes was when I was wearing this mascara. A girl walked up to me and asked me if I was wearing false lashes because they looked so long and full. I love this mascara, it doesn't clump and really defines my lashes. Plus it still leaves my lashes looking soft and natural. One of my biggest pet peeves about some other brand name popular mascaras is how obvious it is that you are wearing mascara because they are clumpy, thick, and make your lashes look like you have tar on them. This mascara gives you the definition you need, while still looking natural. 

 Aveda Petal Essence in Plum Touch

The first time my sister in law gave me this blush to wear, I thought she was nuts. The deep pink on the left hand side seemed way to dark for my fair skin, but when I tried it on it was perfect for me. I love Aveda's products so much. I used to wear their foundation all the time, but I went through it too quickly to be able to purchase it consistently. This blush is still my favorite go to blush, regardless of where I am going because it is so flattering. 

Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation

For years I swore there was no "right" product for me when it came to foundation. I hated liquid foundations, but powder foundations didn't provide the full coverage I needed. Aveda's inner light mineral foundation was great but I went through a container a month, which was getting to be a bit too pricey for me. Enter in this foundation. For about $10 more than the Aveda foundation, this stuff will last me at least 6 months AND gives me the coverage I need. I absolutely love this foundation.

See the Forest for the Trees

We all have those days where we just feel off. We have "nothing to wear" or our hair just isn't doing what we hoped it would, or we just feel lazy and don't feel like doing anything and it throws us off. Ironically enough, I'm having one of those "I have nothing to wear AND my hair looks like crap" days today. 

It's been about three or four months since I've gone off of birth control and as with any medicine, there have been side effects of me going off the pill. Like my chest and jaw line thinking it's 17 again and breaking out terribly. It's awesome. Or gaining an additional five pounds on top of the 15 I'm already trying to lose (aren't most of us?). Among other terrific things....

Needless to say, that lately, more often than not I'm bummed out from all this. When I have these moments, I make it a point to do things to make myself feel better, which I thought I'd share with you today.* 

1. I take a few extra minutes to do more with my makeup.

Most mornings I do the basics, mineral makeup to cover up my face, a quick swipe of blush, and mascara. On the days that I just feel bleh I take the time to do more, wear eye shadow, contour my face with bronzer and highlighter. Just adding one or two more steps to my makeup routine makes me feel so much better. The rest of the day when I look in the mirror I automatically feel better about taking the extra time to enhance my features. 

2. I spend quiet time with Nibbler and Squishee or Dave (or all three!)

Sometimes I need to be reminded that the beauty in the world shouldn't be focused on one person, but on the little things. Like the unconditional love my little family has for each other, or the loyalty that Nibbler has to me. No TV, no music, no phone, no distractions, just me an the boys all laying together listening to them breathe, reminds me that all those things that bother me don't really matter at all.

3. I make it a point to do something I really like. 

One of my favorite things to do is to grab a book and go have a meal at a restaurant somewhere. I don't mind sitting there alone, reading and servers seem to be a little nicer and more attentive when you're alone. When I sigh a sweet little sigh, then I know I've reach  my happy place. 

4. I talk to friends about how I feel. 

My one friend Sheena is really awesome at centering me again. Sometimes she doesn't even have to respond to my complaints, just saying them out loud to  her makes me realize how silly I'm feeling. 

The point I'm making here (mainly to remind myself the next time I feel this way) is that my looks are just one little aspect of my life. And quite frankly, it really doesn't matter. It's just one little tree, in a really big forest.

*It's really funny, I wrote this post Monday night when I was in a good mood, and I'm reading over it today (Wednesday) and I'm glad I wrote this, because it's bringing me back out of this slump I woke up in this morning.

An Open Letter to Bare Minerals

Dear Bare Minerals,

I'm sorry. It's not you, it's me...I think. Everyone else likes something of yours and sings your praises but not me. I tried, I really did, but I just don't like you. 

I bought your 4 piece lips and eyes gift set in the hopes that maybe I could like something of yours since your mineral makeup and I just couldn't get along. And I figured at $10 what could go wrong? 

Well for starters, the lip and blush color look pink in the photos, but they aren't. Which wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the fact that they are probably the least flattering colors for most skin shades. The blush? Golden gate color? Does orange blush look good on anyone? The moxie lip gloss? I've heard so much about how great this stuff was. The color was a brownish color, which again I don't get. Does brown look good on most girls? Why would these shades be in a sample set? Don't you want to pick the most universally flattering colors possible to promote future purchases? Back to the gloss. I had it on for 5 minutes and had to get it off. The smell, the way it coated my lips, everything about it made me want to wipe it off as quickly as I could. 

The eye shadow wasn't too bad, the color is half decent and seems to go on well. But the Almay Nude Shadow trio I bought at the same time has the same exact color in it for half the price. 

Your flawless definition mascara wasn't half bad. It did a great job of separating my lashes and didn't get clumpy but for all the hassle, I can just stick with Cover Girl's Eye Brightening Mascara.

I think it's time we threw in the towel. The next time I'm hypnotized by your beautiful packaging or hyped up products, I'm going to remind myself how much I don't like my experiences with you and I'm going to move on. I'm sorry Bare Minerals, we gave it a good run. 

We'll always have.....well we won't have anything but there are plenty of other girls out there that like you, you'll find someone new soon.

January Beauty Favorites

In November, I posted about a few of my favorite beauty items. I still use everything on that list faithfully, however I also found a couple of new products that I use regularly and I figured I would share with you today:

1. Sonia Kashuk Eye Shadow Quad in Fair and Square

I really like the colors in the Naked 3 pallet, but I'm not sure the pink hues would look nice on my fair skin and didn't want to shell out the $53 bucks to find out whether or not it would, so I decided to pick this up and try out the pinks. The color in the upper left corner was a bit too pink for me, but everything else looks good and satiated my want for Naked 3. 

2. Aveeno Baby Cleansing Therapy Moisturizing Wash

Okay, so I'm not sure if it was weird or not that I use a wash meant for babies, but it definitely leaves my skin really soft and has been helping me beat the super dry skin I normally get.

3. Tarte BB Tinted Primer

I've been avoiding BB creams (or any of those alphabet creams for that matter) for a while because I need something with a bit more coverage than BB creams seem to offer. However when I saw that Tarte was offering this up as a primer too, I decided to give it a shot. This has replaced my normal primer, Neutrogena's Shine Control primer, most days and I love it. 

4. L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara

I used to use Clinque's Lash Doubling Mascara, but I had a coupon for L'Oreal and decided to try out this mascara based on all the good reviews I read about it. L'Oreal's version gives me the same results that Clinque's mascara did for half the price.

5. Tarte Maracuja Oil

I talked about my new found love of this oil here. I love what it has done for my face. 

6. L'Oreal Colour Riche Lip Balm in Heavenly Berry

Another purchase that I "splurged" on because I had a coupon. I was worried the berry might be too dark for me, but since it's a lip balm it gives me the perfect color. I am pretty sure this particular color would be flattering on anyone, but I'm definitely not an expert so....yeah. 

7. philosophy Purity and Refresh Set

I started using each of these products around the same time a few months ago. I definitely noticed my face broke out less after I started using these two. Then I saw that philosophy offers the set for a little less than purchasing the two separately, which is win/win for me!

Oil That's Good for My Face?

Okay so I'm aware this whole "oil is actually good for your face" trend has been around for a while but I was completely hesitant to try it out for myself. I have combination skin, but there are times when it feels like if I were to put my head in my hands, I would literally slip out of them because my face is so oily. Hence, me avoiding adding any oil to my face that was already there. 

Then, while in Vermont, I saw this blemish stick from Burt's Bees. Don't ask me why I picked it up or what inspired me to buy it but I did. 

I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I always get pimples across my chin and this stick did a great job of speeding up the cycle of them being there without over drying my skin. 

Then I saw Tarte was offering a gift set  for $20 that had a sample size of their Maracuja Oil in it (sorry I looked everywhere and I can't seem to find it anymore; however here is another set that has a sample size).

I decided to wait while I was off of work to try it so that if the oil made my face breakout badly, no one except Dave could see it (sorry hubs).  I rubbed some on my hands, then patted it on my face and went to bed. The results that I saw from one use overnight were miraculous. My face had mostly cleared up, my cheeks, which are normally red and splotchy were nice and even toned. It took a few weeks of using the oil on a nightly basis to see my skin clear up completely, but it has. 

The week before my period, I normally breakout with massively large pimples all over my chin. This time? One or two mini ones that disappeared after a few days. 

I've never had clear skin, and I've never been comfortable enough to go out to public events without some type of foundation on, but now I'd be pretty confident to go out bare skinned. There are tons of different oil products out there and I can't speak for any except for these two, (although Sephora has done a pretty good job of rounding up some oils and providing tips on how to use them) but I can say that if you have been hesitant to try the oil trend, take the leap!

e.l.f. - Get it or Forget it? + A Giveaway!

I'm constantly seeing e.l.f. products on my Pinterest feed as great replacements for pricier makeup. I decided to put certain products to the test to see if they are as great as people claim to be. The nice thing about e.l.f. is that everything is priced awesomely with most products ranging between $1-$5. 

So without further ado, here is the list of products I tried and whether or not I feel they are worth it, and if you scroll all the way to the bottom of this post, I'm offering a giveaway on a few select e.l.f. products and a $25 Target gift card!

Essential Holiday 3 piece Plumping Lip Gloss Set - $3

Pros- I liked 2 of the 3 colors (the light pink (middle color in the picture)was a bit too pink for me) but I loved the other two colors and the color itself showed up very nicely on my lips once I was able to get it applied properly.

Cons- I seem to have a problem with e.l.f.'s applicators, they are constantly fighting me when it comes to applying this stuff on me, and these glosses were no exception. I had to dip the applicator in the tube 5 or 6 times to get it evenly coated on my lips. After the gloss dried, it became sticky and didn't stay on very well. 

Get it or Forget it? Forget it. The price is awesome but if you can't get it on your lips and then it won't stay, then what's the point? I will, however, be looking for these colors in other brands because I loved the choices!

Mineral 2 Piece Blemish Set - $5

Pros- It's supposed to help clear up blemishes. I didn't use it long enough to test that claim out. 

Cons- It's meant to hide and disguise blemishes. It didn't. 

Get it or Forget it? Forget it. There are plenty of better concealers and blemish treatments out there, this one didn't do anything it claimed to do for me. 

Mineral 2 Piece Booster Set - $5

Pros- It provides a "finishing touch" on your makeup, almost like a setter. I noticed my face was not as shiny towards the end of the day when the oil on my face would normally work its way out. I definitely feel like it pushed the longevity of my makeup out even further. Also, it did a good job of reducing the size of my pores and softening up my face a little.

Cons- I was not a big fan of the brush. It looks fluffy in the picture, but it's not. It's a bit larger than a concealer brush and since I use this all over my face, I need something that's going to cover more ground in less brush strokes.

Get it or Forget it? Get it, but invest in a different face brush, like this one from e.l.f.

Mineral Eyeshadow Primer - $3

Pros- It works just as well as any other primer I've tried. It helps keep eye shadow on, although I personally feel like certain other primers help colors pop better, like Too Faced's. 

Cons- I don't know what it is about e.l.f. products and their wands but I am forever having trouble with it and this is no exception. The wand deposits very little of the product onto my eye which means I have to dip it into the tube several times to get my whole eyelid covered. Quite frankly, I prefer the tube style of the more popular eyelid primers, however for the price difference I think this con is something I could easily overlook. 

Get it or Forget it? Get it, it works just as well as the more expensive brands for a third of the price. 

Lip Exfoliator - $3

Pros- Does exactly what it promises, it exfoliates and leaves my lips nice and soft (as long as I use chap stick afterwards, of course). 

Cons- The smell. Sometimes it has a very nice vanilla-y smell which is pleasant. Other times it smells like mothballs in my Grandmother's coat closet, which isn't so great.

Get it or Forget it?- Get it, the smell isn't too bad and it definitely has lessened the amount of peeling, chapped lips that I normally get this time of year. 

Tone Correcting Powder- $3

Pros- It definitely does what it says it is going to do, which is correct the color tone on your face. I use it after I prime my face but before I apply my mineral foundation and it helps to lessen the redness in my face. It, however is not a miracle worker. There are still parts of my face (like blemishes) that are a bit too red for this to completely correct, but it does a good job of reducing redness.

Cons- It dries my face out quite a bit. There are a few parts on my face (like my cheeks and chin) that this seems to pull out the dryness even more and causes flakiness to the skin in these areas. I add more moisturizer to those areas and it does help, although there are still some dry patches every once in a while. 

Get it or Forget it?- Toss up. If you have uneven skin tone and are on a budget, get it. It does what you'll need it to do. If you can afford a pricier tone corrector, you may want to find something that will be a bit kinder on dry spots on your face. That being said, I do use this every morning, regardless of the flakiness that it causes. 

Contouring Blush and Bronzing Cream - $3

Pros- I'm going to be honest here. I used this stuff one time and that was it. It wasn't that it was a bad product or anything, I just HATE cream blush, foundations, bronzer, anything. I have no idea why I chose to purchase this to test. It was easy to apply, so that's always a plus.

Cons- If you don't like cream stuff like me, it would be best to avoid this. Also, I've read on a few sites this color is supposed to be flattering for everyone, but I felt like it was a bit too dark on my fair skin, but that is also personal taste, I'm not a huge fan of drastic colors. 

Get it or Forget it?- Toss up. If you like cream blushes and have been lusting after the NARS version of this, get it. Otherwise, forget it.

Studio Bronzer - $3

Pros- Good color, easy to apply. I purchased it in Golden Bronzer and it was a great color for my fact

Cons- It's a bit light, I would think that it wouldn't show up very well on anyone with darker skin. Also, you  have to swirl the colors to get the one tone, so it's hard for me to contour my nose with a smaller brush that isn't mean to swirl.  

Get it or Forget it?- Get it, great price for a great product!

Eyebrow Love

I'm sure you've read it/heard it before. Bloggers, makeup people telling you that you should fill in your eyebrows. Now, most of you should know I'm not a big fan of set makeup rules, but if there was one thing I would tell someone they should consistently do, it's fill in your eyebrows. 

Maskcara has preached it, Kate has preached it, even The Beauty Department has posted a few articles about filling in those brows. Like a good lip color or a splash of eye shadow, filling in your brows enhances your gorgeous-ness. Need proof here is a before and after brow pic of me:

I'm going to point out the obvious here so you don't have to: It's the same exact picture, I just used some computer techniques to enhance my brows to make them appear filled in. 
I'm a terrible selfie taker, I take most of my pictures with my iPhone and it didn't matter how hard I tried I could not get a decent 2nd shot of myself with my darn brows filled in.  

But I digress. If you notice in the 2nd photo, everything seems to pop a bit more. I did nothing to the picture itself except enhance the brows, and yet I seem more put together. I feel like my eyes pop more and the structure of my face changes slightly. 

There are plenty of great, easy products out there to help you fill in your brow. It's really not as scary as you may think. 

Benefit Brow Zings

This is what I currently use. It is a bit on the pricey side, but a little goes a very long way and this is something I'll have for years to come. Just a quick dab on each side of the product, then I fill in the brow. 

elf Studio Eyebrow Kit

I've never personally used this, however word on the streets is that it's a perfect dupe for the Benefit Brow Zings. At literally 1/10 the price, it doesn't hurt to try it first and see how you fare. 

Maybelline Master Shape Eyebrow Pencil

I have also personally used this, I didn't like it as much as the Benefit brow kit, but that just my preference. I prefer the brush to using a pencil. It still worked good and did the trick when it came to filling in my brows. 

There are tons of brow fillers to choose from, these are just a few that I've used/seen before. Either way, take the brow challenge! Either pick up your own brow kit/pencil and fill in those suckers, or head to your nearest Ulta/Sephora and have one of the girls there show you. It really does make a difference!
